Lesson 20

Good morning!

It's time for chapter 3 in our book - The Pelican brief...

But first of all - the book is about the Supreme Court of the United States. Here's a quick view of one case that the court has been ruling in recently.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/16/supreme-court-gay-marriage_n_6439926.html

1. What do you think their verdict was in this specific case?
2. Why do you think it was such a big issue that the Supreme Court would take up this case?

Today I'll hand you the questions before we start reading/listening to the book.

Page 10:
What makes it so hard to find the murderer?
What is Darby looking for in the library?

Page 11:
Tomas, the man Darby's seeing, speaks with his friend Gavin. How did they get to know each other?
What does Tomas want Gavin to tell him?

Page 12:
How old is Darby?
Why did Darby go to the court in Lafayette?

Lesson 19

Today, it's time for chapter 2 in our book:

The Pelican Brief

So far, 4 people have been murdered. Two of them were Supreme Court judges who had FBI protecting them day and night.
Khamel, the most feared killer in the world was paid more than ten million dollars to kill the judges. But by who?

Let's start with the trailer from the movie before we continue reading the book.

Now, let's read chapter two together....

måndag 9 november 2015

Lesson 18

Now it's time for us to read some fiction. I've found a website where we can read e-books for free

I've chosen a book to read together. The book I've chosen is...

The Pelican Brief
By John Grisham

You have to sign up before you can open the book. Then you're able to both read and listen to it! Today I want you to read on your computers while I play the audio file.

If there are words that you don't understand while reading and listening...

...use Linguarana:

Linguarana translates the word that you double click on, and you can choose to listen to how it's pronounciated.

onsdag 4 november 2015

Lesson 17

Today...
... let's continue with the exercise we did during our last lesson -i.e. preparing for the national test next week!

But before that...
...here's today's warm up:

Let's see who knows the most idioms and linking words, by playing some cards where the explanation is on one side and the idiom is on the other side...

All the idioms (and some linking words) can be found on Hanna's English planning at Balder or here: linking words, idioms 1, idioms 2, idioms 3.

måndag 2 november 2015

Lesson 16

Warmup...

Listen to Neewsreel - News from the Englishspeaking world...

Today, we're going to prepare for the national test next week.

We are going to practice at an authentic situation by using former tests that are now available for students in order to get used to the testsituation.

Lesson 15

Halloween is getting even closer now....

Åsa, on the other hand, is in Vänersborg today...

Watch this episode of Modern family

Now, let's play Jeopardy with Halloween words.

Lesson 14

Halloween is coming up soon....

Watch this short filmclip

Discuss in groups of 2-3:
  • Which is your favourite horror movie? What is it about?
  • Do you like Halloween? What do you usually do on Halloween?
On Hanna's lesson yesterday, you all started using Readtheory. What are your thoughts about that? Was everything working?

Now let's continue with last week's task, when you wrote a presentation of yourselves without using your hands i.e. DICTATING!

I've read through all the presentations.
Good job!
Now I want you to use other tools to make the texts even better.

First of all - I want you to go through your text once again, only this time I want you to use SPELL RIGHT.
If you haven't downloaded this program yet, this is how you do it:
1. Go to: TILLÄGG
2. HÄMTA TILLÄGG
3. Look for this symbol:
4. Press: GRATIS
5. Press: OK
6. Now you can open Spell right by pressing: STARTA

Your screen will look like this now:

Secondly: I want you to listen to your own text by using TTS (talsyntes). First you might have to change the language. You do that by going to:
  1. SYSTEMINSTÄLLNINGAR
  2. DIKTERING OCH TAL
  3. TALSYNTES
  4. SYSTEMRÖST
When you listen. Try to see if there are somethings that you might want to change in your texts.

Finally: Send the text to me again. My email: asa.norlin@fridaskolan.se

Don't forget that everything you do att Språkvalet
will affect your English grades.

torsdag 8 oktober 2015

Lesson 13

Today I want you to continue dictating your presentations about yourselves. When you've finished your presentation, I want you to either email me at: asa.norlin@fridaskolan.se or share your document with me.

tisdag 6 oktober 2015

Lesson 12

Today's lesson

Part 1.) Practising for the national test that will take place after the autumn break - the oral part.

If you're in a group discussion, what is important to think about?
  • Only use English
  • Be active (but don't forget to let the rest of the group speak)
  • Ask questions and be interested in what the rest of the group are discussing
  • Use full sentences with a variation of words and expressions
  • Focus on the subject you are given
Today, I'll give you a card each that I want you to read out loud. Then I want you to either agree or disagree with the statement on it. Explain why!

Part 2.)
a.) If you didn't finish the written examination on Hanna's lesson last Monday, this is your second chance. Write a conversation from a restaurant. Use at least 100 words.

b.) If you did finish the written exam, I want you to go to www.newinlevels.com. Choose one newsreport and read it through. Write a few key words so that you're able to retell the news to someone else in the class. If there are words that you don't know, use Linguarana. The translation tool that you downloaded from Chrome webstore.

måndag 5 oktober 2015

Lesson 11

Warm up:
In groups, discuss how you would respond to the following situations:
1. You are at a bus stop when you see a man threatening a boy with a knife and demanding money from him.
2. You are in a crowded bus. Suddenly you notice that the man standing next to you is trying to open a woman's handbag. You seem to be the only one in the bus who has seen it.

Today's lesson: This lesson will be a bit different from the the former ones. Today, you'll be practising at dictating in English and to introduce yourselves to people who don't know you at all.

First of all, I want you to add either American English or British English as your dictating language. I also want you to add a keyboard shortcut. For ex: alt + <

Now open a blank Pages document and press alt + <.
Now you can start dictationg by speaking English and then press "avbryt" as soon as you want to have a break.

Have a look at this filmclip now. Is she introducing herself succesfully?

Use the paper with the exercise: "talk about yourself". Try to answer as many questions as possible. At the end of the lesson, I want you to email me your presentation:
asa.norlin@fridaskolan.se

Lesson 8

Welcome to our big film premiere:

YES!!!!
We managed to make a film about SOME and ANY eventhough half the class was missing and it was an early Tuesday morning....

Let's get into the right mood, before we watch it, by listening to this familiar vignette while we eat SOME popcorn and drink SOME soft drinks....
... Now let's watch our movie!

Film festival:
During the rest of this lesson we will prepare for Hanna's lesson where you'll be practising at restaurant dialogues.
For every film clip we watch today, I want you to write down at least one sentence that has to do with food. Especially ordering food!

The great outdoors

Lousy waitress

Falling down

Memorable pizza movie moments

Great movie sandwich scenes

måndag 21 september 2015

Lesson 7

I was very impressed by you all, during our last lesson. Look at how many words you managed to retell after watching Jamie Oliver's presentation of kitchen tools.

On today's lesson, we will focus on making an informative filmclip about SOME and ANY.

By the end of this lesson, I expect you to have finished the filming, so that we can watch the films together on our Thursday lesson.

If you manage that...
....I promise to bring the popcorn and the soft drinks!

What the films should be about:
  • A dialogue between two (or more) persons, where they use both SOME and ANY a few times. Make sure to you use the correct grammar!
  • At least one person who explains why they use SOME in some sentences and ANY in other sentences. (If you're not sure on when to use some and any, you can always watch the filmclip from lesson 6).
Good luck!

onsdag 16 september 2015

Lesson 6

Kitchen utensils

Let's continue with kitchen utensils a little more...

Watch this filmclip and write down as many words as you can...

Now - let's write them down on the board! I bet you know quite a few words by this time...

SOME and ANY

Our next focus will be on grammar. When to use some and any...

Let's start with the following short filmclip

Here are some words that we have to know before we watch it:

  1. some - någon/några
  2. any - någon/några
  3. positive statements - positiva påståenden
  4. negative statements - negativa påståenden
  5. general questions - allmänna frågor (vanliga frågor)
  6. offers - erbjudanden (man vill ge något)
  7. requests - förfrågningar (man ber om något)

Make your own filmclip about some and any!

Now I want you to make your own short film clips about when to use some and any. If you can manage to combine it with your kitchen utensil words, I'll be very impressed.

Work in groups of at least 3 and film a dialogue between at least two of you... The third person can be the one who explains why the people in the filmclip use either some or any...

Good luck!

As a warm up before your argumentative speech, I want you to discuss advantages and disadvantages with cellphones and other digital appliances such as iPads, computers and so on. One half of the class is for using digital appliances a lot, and the other half is against it.
Find different arguments before we start the discussion. Use the following suggestions on how to start your sentences to get a varied language.

We think...
What we mean is...
We can assure you...
The way we look at it...
Take for example...
Let us give you an example...

Sorry, we can't agree...
Surely you can't mean that...
You must be joking...
That's nonsense...

We disagree completely...
That's not the way we see it...

3. Now let's work with your argumentative speech.
I want you to sit in pairs and tell the other person about your subject. The person who is listening - try to add more arguments to your friend's speech (both for and against).

4. Peer feedback
Practise at your speeches in pairs.
The person who is listening: Give 2 stars and a wish (i.e. two things that you like and one wish for what can make the speech even better.)

Let's start with a reminder from the last lesson: 20 things you should say more often...

Discuss the following in pairs:

  1. Do I say nice things to people around me as much as I think I should? Why/ why not?
  2. What nice things am I good at saying? And what things do I think are hard to say?
  3. How do I react when people say nice things to me (or give me compliments)?

Today I would like you to watch this short clip about Kindness boomerang.

What is a boomerang by the way?

Now I would like you to watch the clip once more, but this time I would like you to stop at each new meeting and discuss what the people in the clip might be saying to eachother.
