Today's lesson will be divided in two parts. First I would like you to practise at some different situations when ordering food. After that you'll get some time to practise for your English test on Monday.

Part 1)
Choose one of the menues below and pretend that one of you is ordering (red) and the other one is taking orders (blue). Make sure the following parts are included in your dialogue:

Person 1:
  • Welcome the customer
  • Ask how you can help them
  • Be as helpful as you can
  • Tell the customer that you're out of something and suggest something else
  • Repeat the order
  • Tell the customer how long it will take before he/she will get the food. Offer something while he/she is waiting

Person 2:

  • Make an order for three people (one is vegetarian and one is allergic to nuts)
  • Order both food and drinks
  • Ask what ingredients are included in one of the dishes
  • After the waitress/waiter has repeated your order - make one change
  • Ask for the bill

Part 2)

Practise at the words (for the test) at: www.glosor.eu or play memory with the cards I brought a few lessons ago.

Lesson 8

Welcome to our big film premiere:

YES!!!!
We managed to make a film about SOME and ANY eventhough half the class was missing and it was an early Tuesday morning....

Let's get into the right mood, before we watch it, by listening to this familiar vignette while we eat SOME popcorn and drink SOME soft drinks....
... Now let's watch our movie!

Film festival:
During the rest of this lesson we will prepare for Hanna's lesson where you'll be practising at restaurant dialogues.
For every film clip we watch today, I want you to write down at least one sentence that has to do with food. Especially ordering food!

The great outdoors

Lousy waitress

Falling down

Memorable pizza movie moments

Great movie sandwich scenes

Lesson 7

I was very impressed by you all, during our last lesson. Look at how many words you managed to retell after watching Jamie Oliver's presentation of kitchen tools.

On today's lesson, we will focus on making an informative filmclip about SOME and ANY.

By the end of this lesson, I expect you to have finished the filming, so that we can watch the films together on our Thursday lesson.

If you manage that...
....I promise to bring the popcorn and the soft drinks!

What the films should be about:
  • A dialogue between two (or more) persons, where they use both SOME and ANY a few times. Make sure to you use the correct grammar!
  • At least one person who explains why they use SOME in some sentences and ANY in other sentences. (If you're not sure on when to use some and any, you can always watch the filmclip from lesson 6).
Good luck!

Lesson 6

Kitchen utensils

Let's continue with kitchen utensils a little more...

Watch this filmclip and write down as many words as you can...

Now - let's write them down on the board! I bet you know quite a few words by this time...

SOME and ANY

Our next focus will be on grammar. When to use some and any...

Let's start with the following short filmclip

Here are some words that we have to know before we watch it:

  1. some - någon/några
  2. any - någon/några
  3. positive statements - positiva påståenden
  4. negative statements - negativa påståenden
  5. general questions - allmänna frågor (vanliga frågor)
  6. offers - erbjudanden (man vill ge något)
  7. requests - förfrågningar (man ber om något)

Make your own filmclip about some and any!

Now I want you to make your own short film clips about when to use some and any. If you can manage to combine it with your kitchen utensil words, I'll be very impressed.

Work in groups of at least 3 and film a dialogue between at least two of you... The third person can be the one who explains why the people in the filmclip use either some or any...

Good luck!

Lesson 4

1. Let's start with another short film clip.

2. Warm up:
As a warm up before your argumentative speech, I want you to discuss advantages and disadvantages with cellphones and other digital appliances such as iPads, computers and so on. One half of the class is for using digital appliances a lot, and the other half is against it.
Find different arguments before we start the discussion. Use the following suggestions on how to start your sentences to get a varied language.

We think...
What we mean is...
We can assure you...
The way we look at it...
Take for example...
Let us give you an example...

Sorry, we can't agree...
Surely you can't mean that...
You must be joking...
That's nonsense...

We disagree completely...
That's not the way we see it...

3. Now let's work with your argumentative speech.
I want you to sit in pairs and tell the other person about your subject. The person who is listening - try to add more arguments to your friend's speech (both for and against).

4. Peer feedback
Practise at your speeches in pairs.
The person who is listening: Give 2 stars and a wish (i.e. two things that you like and one wish for what can make the speech even better.)

3. Prepararation time for your argumentative speech. Here are som good phrases that you can use:

...when you want to give your opinion about something
I think... / I don't think
In my opinion...
It seems to me...
If you ask me, ...
As far as I know...
What I mean is...
I can assure you...
The way I look at it
The way I see it...
Take for example...
Let me give you an example...

...when you are sure about something
I'm sure.
I'm positive.
I'm absolutely certain.
There's no doubt about it.
I'm convinced that...
There's no doubt in my mind

Lesson 2

Let's keep on with the kindness theme...

Let's start with a reminder from the last lesson: 20 things you should say more often...

Discuss the following in pairs:

  1. Do I say nice things to people around me as much as I think I should? Why/ why not?
  2. What nice things am I good at saying? And what things do I think are hard to say?
  3. How do I react when people say nice things to me (or give me compliments)?

Today I would like you to watch this short clip about Kindness boomerang.

What is a boomerang by the way?

Now I would like you to watch the clip once more, but this time I would like you to stop at each new meeting and discuss what the people in the clip might be saying to eachother.

If there's time left, I would like you to practice at the homework that Hanna gave you.
